Day 20
Day 20- Caves in Matera
Alyssa is going to do the write-up today!
Today we had an early start to the day in attempt to beat the heat! However we only beat it for about 45 minutes of todays endeavours... We drove to the side of the gorge opposite the town of Matera (the super old town we visited a few days ago) and explored the caves that are carved into the rocky exterior of the cliff. Some of these caves were old houses and others were churches. We had a good time guessing which caves were which since all descriptions were in Italian. The boys have claimed that visiting 3 churches today has exempted them for the next 3 Sundays, mom believes otherwise. Getting from cave to cave involved some rock climbing and steep hills (billy goat style). The weak link was surprisingly not mom.. or dad... or Matt... and it obviously wasn't me. By about 12:30 the heat had hit full force and we retreated to the hotel for some pool time, reading and of course a friendly game of cards. I'll have it be known, that today Mom lost her first game of cards since the beginning of the trip; it was a total slaughter in the "up and down game" by none other than yours truly. After my legendary victory, we relocated indoors due to a rain storm... yes a thunder storm. It was the first bit of a rain that we've had this trip, and it was full blown (thunder, lightening, sheeting rain, the whole shebang). When the boys (all 3) lost interest in the indoor activities, they took to the elevator for their entertainment... see video below...
Love Always,
Alyssa
Italian Word of the Day: ascensore which means elevator (see video below......seriously what I have to deal with on a daily basis....just sayin')
