Day 25
Day 25 - San Gimignano
Only 30 km from Siena is another small medieval Tuscan hill town called San Gimignano. This town is also surrounded by a wall and is known for its famous tower houses. By the middle of the 1300's, there was conflict in the town between families. The rivalry resulted in competing families building tower houses of increasingly higher and higher heights. There were, at one point, 72 towers in the town of varying heights up to 230 feet tall. However, today only 14 still remain. From a distance, it looks like a very TOWERFUL place! Haha!
We all loved this town! It was very medieval and the architecture was impressive. Greg and the boys climbed to the top of the tallest remaining tower and were rewarded with a beautiful view of San Gimignano from its highest point! We had a wonderful day exploring the town, and returned back to Siena in time to also go back to that city at night ....under the lights!
All in all, it was a super day! We, admittedly, will NOT be going to Florence. It was a debate, but since we consider ourselves more "small town" folks, we opted for San Gimignano instead.
Yes, we understand that we will not get to see Michelangelo's David....but really, if you have seen one you have seen them all, right?? And I may add that I feel that I have really seen David repeatedly over the last few weeks.....his impressive anatomy seems to show up on all sorts of souvenir items! You name it, they can place a picture of David on it! Full frontal of course......
Off to Venice tomorrow....our final destination!
Love to Everyone,
Micki
